Former Supreme Court Judge Justice MY Eqbal passed away in Delhi this morning. He was 70 years old.

He was a judge in the apex court from December 2012 to February 2016. He had earlier served as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. On May 9, 1996, he was appointed as a permanent judge in the Patna High Court. Earlier, he used to practice as a lawyer in the Patna High Court.

Justice Eqbal, who was also justice in the Jharkhand High Court, was born on February 13, 1951. He received a Bsc degree from Ranchi University in 1970 and an LLB degree (Gold Medalist) in 1974. According to information on the Jharkhand High Court website, he started practice in 1975 in a civil court in Ranchi. Then, in 1986, he started practicing in the Ranchi Bench of the Patna High Court.

In 1993, he became a public prosecutor in the Patna High Court. He looked into civil, criminal, constitutional, and tax-related matters. He also worked as a legal adviser to all banks, insurance companies, electricity boards, housing boards, government companies. He became a judge of the Jharkhand High Court on November 14, 2000. According to media reports, Justice Eqbal, who belonged to the Jharkhand Legal Service Authority, was the first judge of Jharkhand to hold the post of Chief Justice in a high court in the country.
