Punjab And Haryana High Court imposed a Cost Of Rs 10,000 on a Couple for not wearing Mask during wedding ceremony.

A writ petition had been filed under Article 226 of the Constitution of India read with Section 482 Cr.P.C. for issuance of appropriate direction to the state, to protect the life and liberty of the petitioners at the hands of Respondents

It was contended by the Learned counsel for the petitioners that the petitioners are major and have solemnized their marriage in accordance with law. However, the private respondents are not accepting their marriage and are adamant to separate them from each other by resorting to illegal means.

The Court without going into the validity of the marriage of the petitioners, disposed of the present petition with a direction to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Gurdaspur to take appropriate remedial measures as warranted by law.

In the meantime, necessary order be passed to ensure that no harm is caused to the life and liberty of the petitioners at the hands of private respondents.

The Court held:

Perusal of the photographs attached with the petition, Annexure P-4 shows that at the time of marriage ceremony, the petitioners and other attending persons were not wearing the masks, which is otherwise necessary in view of COVID-19 pandemic. Accordingly, the petitioners are burdened with Rs.10,000/- as costs to be deposited with the Deputy Commissioner, Hoshiarpur within a period of 15 days from today and the amount so deposited by the petitioners shall be utilized for the purpose of arranging masks for the public at large within the District Hoshiarpur.
