COVID-19: Govt. issued Advisory to Social Media Platforms to Curb False News/Misinformation on Coronavirus

The Corona Virus outbreak has become a gobal concern with World health Organisation declaring it a global health Emergency. As such the Govt. issued Advisory to Social Media Platforms to Curb False News/Misinformation on Coronavirus.

As per Media reports, a trend has emerged of sharing and circulating misinformation, fake news and anonmys data related to COVID-19 on social media.This has concerned the authorities as it is creating panic in the public.

Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in that view, has issued instructions to the platforms urging them to follow due diligence as prescribed under Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines)Rules 2011, notified under Section 79 of the IT Act.

The Social Media platforms are intermediaries as defined under Section 2 (1)(w) of the IT Act has been asked to inform their users to not to host, display,upload, modify, transmit, publish and update any false information that can affect public order in any way.

They are urged to :

  • Initiate awareness campaignfor the users not to circulate/upload any false news/misinformation concerning coronavirus
  • Take immidiate action to remove/diable such information on thier platforms 
  • Promote dissemination of authentic information concerning coronavirus as far as possible.
