In a first, the Karnataka High Court recently granted permission to a woman lawyer to give the judicial services main examination from her hometown Mangaluru, in view of her delicate health status in the eighth month of her pregnancy.
According to per a press note issued on November 17, the lawyer would be allowed to take the mains exam from the District Court at Mangaluru instead of the capital city of Bengaluru.
The mains exam are scheduled to be held on November 18 and 19 in Bengaluru. The exams are part of the direct recruitment drive to fill 57 vacancies in civil judge posts.
The preliminary examinations took place on July 27. After qualifying the preliminary exams, Advocate Nethravathi wrote to the High Court seeking permission to appear for the mains exam from Mangaluru.
She explained that since she was eight and a half months pregnant, it would be difficult for her to travel all the way to Bengaluru for the mains exam.
A High Court committee comprising Justices PS Dinesh Kumar, K Somashekar, S Sunil Dutt Yadav, Ashok S Kinagi, and M Nagaprasanna, proceeded to allow the woman’s request.
The committee’s decision was approved by Chief Justice Prasanna B Varale as well.
Accordingly, the Registrar General of the High Court has deputed a lady judicial officer to act as an observer to conduct the main examination at the District Court in Mangaluru under the supervision of the Principal District and Sessions Judge.
The Principal District and Sessions Judge at Mangaluru has also been directed to make necessary medical arrangements at the exam centre to address any emergency.
