The Supreme Court has refused to entertain a contempt petition filed against National Register of Citizens (NRC) coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma, but agreed to consider an amended petition to be filed by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (JUH).
A bench comprising of of Chief Justice SA Bobde, Justice AS Bopanna and Justice V Ramasubramanian on Thursday dismissed the contempt petition against Sarma.
The bench asked the petitioner to amend the petition to challenge the notification issued on October 13, 2020 by the NRC coordinator.
Upon hearing the petitioners, the apex court ordered the matter to be listed next week to enable the petitioner to amend the contempt petition.
The Apex Court will consider the petition filed by the JUH against the notification issued by Sarma to delete the names of ineligible persons in the NRC final list.
The NRC Coordinator, while issuing the notification, had asked all the District Collectors (DCs) and district registrars to take action against those persons who have been declared foreigners in the NRC lists and whose cases are pending before the Foreigners Tribunals.
In the petition filed in the court, it has been argued that the previous state coordinator also did the verification work, and the names were included in the list after rigorous examination.
